Because I said so! That’s Why! If you heard your mom use that phrase as a child (and you know you did!), you probably swore you’d never say it as a parent . . . and then quickly found out that it was quite useful. After all, mother knows best! As we celebrate our moms this month, we thought it’d be fun to hear what our moms have said over the years to give us wisdom and guide us down the right path.
Moms are busy. Always. With so much going on, short witty responses just fit the bill. Moms shouldn’t have to explain themselves or justify their decisions to children who constantly question. Thus was born the number one mom-ism, “Because I said so!” Moms are also constantly having to repeat themselves while trying to teach and guide, and their efforts can often seem unrewarded. If mom was ever a little short or a little sarcastic, you just might have gotten “on her last nerve” (another popular saying)! If that was the case, some of these other top 20 expressions might sound familiar.
Were you raised in a barn?
If all your friends jumped off a cliff, would you jump too?
Eat what’s on your plate. There are children starving in Africa.
Stop crying or I’m going to give you something to cry about!
If you’re too sick to go to school, you’re too sick to go play.
What part of “NO” did you not understand?
Nobody ever said life was fair.
I didn’t ask you. I told you.
You’re bored? Let me give you something to do!
Lord have mercy!
What did you say?
Don’t make me have to come in there!
What do you think you’re doing?
Go ahead! See what happens!
I don’t want to hear it!
Even if mom was sometimes frustrated, we also know there’s no love like a mother’s love. So not all the mom-isms we remember are of our moms being at their wits’ ends. Rounding out the top 20 mom expressions, we also remember fondly moms telling us to be sure we’re wearing clean underwear in case we’re in a car accident. We’ve probably also heard that we’ll never be too old to be mom’s “baby.”
Most importantly, moms everywhere have said, “I’ll always love you no matter what.” Right back at ya, mom!
