Two oral antiviral treatments for COVID-19 are now available with a healthcare professional’s prescription. The treatments Paxlovid, by Pfizer, and Lagevrio, by Merck, both have an Emergency Use Authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to help your body fight COVID-19. These oral antiviral treatments help to stop the SARS-CoV-2 virus (the virus that causes COVID-19) from multiplying in your body. This helps to lower the amount of the virus that is in your body which can result in less serious symptoms and may lower the chances of getting worse and/or needing hospitalization.
Who is eligible for treatment with Paxlovid or Lagevrio?
If you have tested positive for COVID-19, are at high risk of getting more serious symptoms, and/or have not been hospitalized but have mild to moderate symptoms you may be eligible for treatment. As mentioned, both Paxlovid and Lagevrio require a prescription from a healthcare professional. You must have tested positive for COVID-19 and your symptoms must have started no later than within the last 5 days. For Lagevrio, you must be at least 18 years old and with Paxlovid you must be at least 12 years old and weigh at least 88 lbs.
