Resident Spotlight, December 2023
Our Resident Spotlight shines on Floris Dunn for the month of December. Ms. Floris was born and raised in the Smyrna area, growing up the youngest in a family with 3 brothers and 5 sisters.
Ms. Floris went to Mableton High School and remembers loving school. She says she wanted to do it all over again when she graduated. Ms. Floris was the student who not only made straight A’s but was the student the school relied on to help teach when a teacher was out sick. She graduated at age 16, was the second in her class, and gave a speech at graduation.
One of Ms. Floris’ favorite things in high school was playing basketball. She loved it and was really good at it too. It was at a basketball game that she met her future husband. After graduation, Ms. Floris went to work as a bookkeeper at First National Bank. She enjoyed the job, but getting home after some of the longer days was too difficult and she then went to work for the Police Department as a school crossing guard. Then she got married and Ms. Floris had a son and a daughter.
Ms. Floris and her husband started a construction business, building houses. She got her Real Estate License at that time and helped him do the house building too. At that time Cobb County had an all-volunteer Fire Department. Ms. Floris’ husband became the 1st Fire Chief for Cobb County. She remembers doing fundraising to help buy fire engines and build firehouses. Later, Ms. Floris was the Office Manager at Kmart in Mableton and kept that job until she retired. She remembers buying her grandson a giant Easter bunny from that store.
As a teenager, Ms. Floris joined Davis Chapel Baptist church. It was such a small church that they didn’t have a baptismal pool. Ms. Floris remembers being baptized in Sweetwater Creek. Later, Ms. Floris joined the Austell Christian Church and has been a member there for many years.
When talking about her hobbies, Ms. Floris said she didn’t have time for many of those but did sew her daughter’s clothes as well as her own. Ms. Floris also loves reading and spending time with her two grandsons, Don and Chris. Ms. Floris’ family says she is a great cook. Her son remembers that she made biscuits every day. Ms. Floris’ daughter-in-law says she treated her like one of her own.
Here at Woodland Ridge, Ms. Floris enjoys Bible study, exercise, bingo, crafts, music, and bus rides. She always has a smile and a laugh for everyone. We’re so glad she decided to call Woodland Ridge her home.
