Resident Spotlight, January 2022
In our Resident Spotlight this month is Ms. Beverly Keith. Ms. Beverly was born and raised in Atlanta, Georgia and graduated from H. M. Turner High School where she was the Head Majorette all four of her high school years. After graduation, Ms. Beverly went to business school where she honed the skills that landed her the position of the first black key punch operator for Rich’s Department Store. She worked at Rich’s for many years before starting a job with MARTA before they had trains and train stations, just street cars or buses. She was such a skilled key punch operator that it wasn’t long before she was names Supervisor of the Department.
Fashion has always been a passion for Ms. Beverly. She learned to sew at age 12 and made virtually everything she wore. Her sister remembers that as a child, Ms. Beverly used coke bottles as dolls, using grass for hair and creating clothing from scraps of fabric. She would style and plait the grass hair and sew the clothes for hours. This love of creating clothing continued so that years later she opened her own shop called “Sew n Sew” in Buffalo, New York. Other craft type ventures led to creating room freshener dolls decked out in lace, making aprons, creating jewelry and many ceramic collectible pieces. Ms. Beverly and her mother went to many craft shows all over Georgia for years.
Ms. Beverly met her husband when they were in 8th grade. At that time, she hated his guts, but he persisted until she agreed that she loved him and they eventually married. They loved to travel both by car and on cruise ships to see new sites. Ms. Beverly is the oldest girl of 7 children in her family. She also has a son, Emery, who will go to the ends of the Earth for his Mom.
Ms. Beverly has always been a leader, belonging to groups like the Red Hatters, Eastern Star, the Bowden Whist Club and as her sister said, “bossing the family around too.” As a leader, Ms. Beverly didn’t accept the limitations the doctors told her she’d have, but instead keeps going beyond expectations. Here at Woodland Ridge, she’s made many friends and enjoys the exercise, music, Bible study, parties and scenic rides. She also has a soft spot for Bella, the beagle, always offering her treats. We love having Ms. Beverly as part of our Woodland Ridge family. Her smile and great attitude brighten up everyone’s day!
