RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT – MARCH 2022
Our Resident Spotlight shines on Brenda Cotton for March 2022. Ms. Brenda is from Atlanta and grew up in a family with three brothers and one sister. She was very close to her sister, who passed away three years ago. She is also close to her youngest brother since they are the two youngest in the family. Ms. Brenda remembers taking trips with him and her mother to visit family in New York, Chicago and especially to see her grandmother in Pine Mountain, Georgia. Ms. Brenda says she remembers the typical sibling fights over who was right.
After graduating magna cum laude from Booker T. Washington High School, Ms. Brenda went on to get her Bachelor’s degree in education from Spellman University using the academic scholarship she was awarded, followed by her Master’s degree from Georgia State University. She then taught at John F. Kennedy Middle School for over 25 years, teaching reading and English. Ms. Brenda was named Teacher of the Year, but says her proudest moments came when her students would amaze her by winning oratorical contests.
Ms. Brenda smiles as she says, “I never married, but I hope it’s not too late!” She is close to her niece, LaChandra and loves spending time with her and other family too. Her family says she is very humorous and joyful and is considered the most fun of all the family members because of her quick wit. Ms. Brenda always enjoyed babysitting with her nieces and nephews or helping with homework, projects and tutoring. She enjoys preparing Sunday dinner, especially the desserts and making sure she got the first piece of cake! In her spare time, Ms. Brenda loves to do watercolor painting of scenery or read a good book. She would often draw and hand paint her classroom decorations, causing her peeres to ask her to create décor for their classrooms or homes as well. On her summer breaks from teaching, she loved to go to visit her Grandma in Pine Mountain or in later years going to the annual family reunions. When she retired, Ms. Brenda says she missed the teachers and students, but they do keep in touch and go out to eat every month.
Here at Woodland Ridge, it’s no surprise that Ms. Brenda loves reading to the Nickajack Elementary students every Friday. She comes to nearly every activity, but enjoys the music, crafts, exercise, Bible study, scenic rides and bingo the most. We love Ms. Brenda’s upbeat, outgoing attitude and are so happy she joined our Woodland Ridge family.
