There are many different assisted living communities out there, so how do you choose the right one for you (or an aging loved one)? First of all, you don’t want to be the one to choose it for an aging person, even if it’s your mother or father. They have every right to decide the type of elderly care service for their future, even if you don’t agree completely.
You need to respect their decision. Yet, when an elderly person has agreed that assisted living is right for them moving forward, there will be (most likely in most locations) a few different options.
Not all assisted living communities are the same. That’s why you have to take your time and look at what each one has to offer, its location, the activities, and much more before deciding where to live.
Taking a tour — whether it’s in person or virtual — is a great way to get a sense of what the facility offers. There are many reasons why a tour is so beneficial and we’re going to give you just a few to consider here.
First, you get to know the facility for its elderly care services.
The best type of tour is one that you go on in person. Sure, you can get a lot of information and insight from a virtual tour, but you won’t get a real sense of the environment, the smells, how nature or outside sounds affect the rooms or even the people who live there.
If you have an opportunity, do an in-person tour.
Second, you’ll get to personally view the dining options.
At an assisted living facility, the dining facility should not be like a high school cafeteria. It should be like a restaurant, somewhere residents can sit down and enjoy a nice meal. The finer assisted living facilities will have a high-quality chef on staff who is responsive and willing to listen to residents and their needs and desires when it comes to the menu.
Third, you can get a true visual sense of each room.
It’s difficult to figure out how big a room is until you see it in person. You can view all sorts of pictures and videos online, but until you’re standing in the middle of the room it’s difficult to figure out how you’re going to live there, feel there, or enjoy your new home.
Lastly, the senior might see a familiar face or two at the elderly care assisted living community.
If you’re looking at an assisted living facility near where the aging senior lives and perhaps has lived for a long time, he or she might actually see people they know. They might not be considered good friends, but they got along many years ago and perhaps lost touch.
That bit of familiarity can make a huge difference in helping to convince someone that this is where they should be for their future.
With the pandemic now moving into the rearview mirror of our lives, more facilities should be offering in-person tours once again, so take advantage of them when you have the opportunity.
