Resident Spotlight – August 2024
The Resident Spotlight for August shines on Evelyn Hankins. Ms. Evelyn is originally from Virginia and grew up with one sister and 2 brothers. Her first job was working in her Uncle’s General Store. In school, Ms. Evelyn enjoyed English and Home Economics classes and liked bowling and going to the baseball and football games.
After graduating from Richlands High School, Ms. Evelyn married her husband, Robert. Their first home was built by a creek and had a picket fence. It was built by her cousins and her in-laws. Robert was in the Air Force and Ms. Evelyn was an Air Force wife, living in New Hampshire, Illinois, and her favorite place, Charleston, South Carolina. They passed through Alaska, Hawaii, and Japan to serve in the Philippines. While in the Philippines, Ms. Evelyn worked for the Red Cross with the officer’s wives and helped arrange surgeries for babies born with cleft palettes. In Illinois, while working at the base hospital, she was involved in caring for wounded soldiers returning from Korea.
Ms. Evelyn and her husband have 2 children, a son, Damon, and a daughter, Letha. They have 1 grandson and 4 granddaughters, as well as 3 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild. The family remembers taking a road trip from the West Coast to the East Coast in their 1964 Chevy station wagon, the kind with the wood on the sides. Ms. Evelyn was always there to support her children’s sports activities too.
When Robert was working for Lockheed, they moved to Atlanta after spending 20 years on the move. Ms. Evelyn worked at Rich’s Department Store for 32 years in draperies, carpets, and the cash office. She was assigned to the cash office because she had the most patience with older customers and received an award for opening the most accounts.
Her traveling continued with trips to Utah, Ohio, and Florida. The family had a lake house that Ms. Evelyn loved to visit too. A lifelong Methodist, Ms. Evelyn enjoyed teaching Sunday School. Her grandchildren are a special joy to her. Her granddaughter had a special shelf for her “Juicy Juice” at Grandma’s house and made everyone laugh by proclaiming that casseroles were made by adults to hide food people didn’t like. Ms. Evelyn loves to cook and says she likes to make chicken salad and soups the most.
At Woodland Ridge, Ms. Evelyn enjoys the pet visits, the beauty shop, and the meals and always has a smile and a good attitude toward everyone.
We’re so glad she decided to call Woodland Ridge her home.
