Resident Spotlight – December 2024
Our Resident Spotlight shines on Ms. Elizabeth Carmichael for December. Ms. Elizabeth is originally from Morrow, Georgia, and was the second oldest of 14 children. There were 10 boys and 4 girls and she was the only girl for 15 years. Her father was a Baptist minister and when her mother passed away at age 53, Ms. Elizabeth stepped up to raise her two youngest siblings. She remembers going to elementary and high school when there was no electricity in the schools. She was voted the prettiest girl in her senior class. Ms. Elizabeth went on to Clark University for 2 years before getting married. She has a daughter, Cynthia, and a son, Kelvin, as well as 2 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
Ms. Elizabeth’s career started with breaking the barrier and being the first black person hired at C and S Bank in Atlanta. She was a sorter who balanced and coded for the bank. After 3 years there, Ms. Elizabeth worked for the Federal Reserve Bank for 28 years. There was also a time when Ms. Elizabeth and her family moved to Michigan for her husband’s job with Ford. She worked at Hudson’s and Sears and Roebuck while there. She didn’t like the cold and snow shoveling and returned to Georgia.
Cascade United Methodist Church is where Ms. Elizabeth sang in the women’s choir, was a communion steward, and was part of a group called the Torch Bearers that helped care for the seniors in her church, taking them shopping, to church, and helping wherever needed.
Music is Ms. Elizabeth’s passion. She and a friend have attended concerts for years and heard such greats as Otis Redding, Ray Charles, and Dr. John. She says she especially loves jazz. Another passion is her pets. She’s had several dogs over the years, from a dachshund to a mini pinscher.
There are two things Ms. Elizabeth is proud that she was able to do. First, she learned to drive at age 49, taking lessons from her daughter. She says she never got a ticket and had no accidents. Second, buying and paying for her house in East Point all on her own.
Here at Woodland Ridge, Ms. Elizabeth enjoys the music activities, the pet visits, trips out for lunch, and the company of other residents.
We’re so happy she decided to call Woodland Ridge her new home.
