Resident Spotlight – July 2024
Our Resident Spotlight shines on Walter Luttrell for the month of July. Mr. Walter was born in Jacksonville, Florida, the youngest of 12 siblings. Shortly after he was born, his family moved to St. Mary’s, Georgia, and then later to Savannah. While he was enlisted with the Air Force Reserve, Mr. Walter was trained in electrical engineering. Walter can be considered a self-taught genius, reading books on physics, including Stephen Hawking’s “A Brief History of Time” just for fun.
Walter met his wife, Janet in Savannah and they married in 1970. For part of their honeymoon, they went to the Varsity in Atlanta and then on to New Orleans. In Savannah, Walter worked as a television engineer. Legend has it that he was instrumental in developing the emergency switchover for broadcast television. Walter came to Atlanta to work for WXIA TV. Walter says, “I kept everything going at WXIA.” On one occasion, Walter repaired the antennae that was on the rooftop of the Peachtree Plaza Hotel, the tallest building in Atlanta at the time. One of his lunch buddies at WXIA was former Falcons running back, Harmon Wages. Unfortunately, Walter didn’t mention this to his oldest son who is a huge Falcons fan. Later in his career, Walter worked for Panasonic, often traveling to New York City and Japan.
Walter and his wife, Janet, have 2 sons, James and Randy who both live in Smyrna. He has one daughter-in-law, Stephany, and one granddaughter, Julie. His hobbies include lifting weights, swimming in the family backyard pool, and hiking at Kennesaw Mountain. Walter is a dedicated family man and would take his family on trips to Panama City Beach, Disney World, and Washington, D.C. His youngest son, Randy, is severely mentally disabled and Walter took early retirement to care for Randy. Walter did everything he could to make sure Randy was well cared for and treated with love, kindness, and dignity.
Here at Woodland Ridge, Walter enjoys doing art classes and reading the newspaper and he especially loves music, mainly Elvis, Dolly Parton, and Neil Diamond. Staff and residents alike say that Walter is a kind, nice person who’s a joy to be around.
We’re so glad he decided to call Woodland Ridge his home.
