Resident Spotlight – February 2024
Our Resident Spotlight shines on Homer Routh for February 2024. Mr. Homer is originally from Los Planos, Honduras. He has one younger brother, Jack, who passed away last year at age 91. Their father was the manager of a banana plantation for the Standard Fruit Company which is now Dole Foods. Mr. Homer always says he had everything he needed when he was young: a horse, a dog, a pig, a macaw, a girlfriend, and a soccer ball. Swimming in the Caribbean was a favorite pastime.
In 1941, at age 14, Mr. Homer’s parents sent him to St. Paul’s Catholic boarding school in Covington, Louisiana. He remembers being scared when the ship docked in New Orleans, saying he’d never seen so many cars in one place. Since Mr. Homer didn’t speak English very well, he took a Spanish class to learn English and ended up helping the teacher teach the class. While at St. Paul’s Mr. Homer ran track becoming the state champions in 1945.
After graduating there were few opportunities to go to college since the spots were filled with returning GIs. Mr. Homer instead went into the construction business, working as a pipefitter/steamfitter for the Grinnell Corporation. That job took him to the Carolinas, Louisiana, and finally Georgia. His last 20 years on the job were as a Project Manager for the Cleveland Electric Company, part of which was spent at the Oak Ridge, Tennessee nuclear facility.
A friend’s mom introduced Mr. Homer to his future wife in Oakdale, Louisiana. They were married for 57 years and have 6 children, 4 sons and 2 daughters along with 3 grandsons and 1 granddaughter. Their daughter, Anna, remembers the family going to Indian Springs Park for cookouts and swimming. She says cookouts were Mr. Homer’s specialty. For hobbies, Mr. Homer enjoys swimming in the ocean, going to Savannah for good seafood, going to New Orleans, and enjoying the Cajun culture. Wherever they lived Mr. Homer found a place to go fishing and he loves to watch soccer.
Here at Woodland Ridge, Mr. Homer enjoys the pet visits, bingo, scenic rides, the music and can name most of the songs during Name That Tune. He is a friend to everyone and always has a ready smile.
We’re so happy he decided to call Woodland Ridge his home.
