It is not uncommon to put off having a conversation about care options or other age-related topics. People rationalize that the current situation for their parents is fine, so they should not rock the boat. Often, as people age, they become more resistant to change, distant, and withdrawn; therefore, it is much easier for us to avoid the conversation altogether.
Why is there such resistance and lack of urgency to facing things like mounting physical and safety concerns? At the core, it is because we are afraid to face the reality of loss. We as adult children have never thought of how it feels to confront the loss of independence.
