RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT August 2023
Our Resident Spotlight shines on Ms. Peggy Jeffords for the month of August. Ms. Peggy is originally from Odum, Georgia, and grew up with 4 sisters and 1 brother. Her grandfather owned the general store and a cousin owned the theater, so Ms. Peggy spent a lot of time at both of those places.
At the age of 20, Ms. Peggy began working at a dry cleaner in Atlanta as a counter girl. She learned every aspect of the business and worked as the manager when the owner died 13 years later. After 2 more years, when the owner’s wife closed the business, a nearby dry cleaner offered her the chance to buy their business and they would finance her. Ms. Peggy owned and operated that business for another 27 years. Giving the best service was Ms. Peggy’s goal. It didn’t matter if her customer was black or white, rich or poor, they were treated with respect. Ms. Peggy became a community sponsor for other businesses, charities, and fundraisers. Those customers became her friends. Her daughter, Debbie, says her mom never charged a family for cleaning the clothing someone was to be buried in, or what the family would be wearing to the funeral.
Ms. Peggy’s faith has always been strong. She has always trusted her faith to help her through life’s struggles. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Austell for many years, teaching Sunday School, vacation Bible school, and helping in the kitchen, nursery or anywhere she was needed. At Christmas, Ms. Peggy could be found caroling, delivering food, clothing, and toys, and visiting with the shut-ins.
For fun, Ms. Peggy and her husband, Danny, loved to go to the beach. Neither one had a sense of direction and could get lost within 10 miles of home, but they managed to find their way to Myrtle Beach, Panama City, or St. Augustine. Ms. Peggy also enjoys country music. The Gaithers and The Oak Ridge Boys are her favorites. She even got to meet William Lee Golden at one concert.
Living off Chapel Hill Road in Douglasville, Ms. Peggy was so excited when Arbor Place Mall opened up. She could spend all day shopping and would have “Sister Day” where she and her sisters would spend the day from breakfast to dinner shopping, eating, and being silly. Ms. Peggy loved the crowds at Christmas, shopping from Thanksgiving right up to Christmas Eve.
Ms. Peggy has 2 daughters and 3 grandchildren that she loves dearly. She and her daughters and grandchildren took trips, one to Alaska, one to the Smoky Mountains, and also beach trips. After all that shopping, Ms. Peggy made Christmas a big deal for her family. She cooked a huge dinner and although her grandchildren lived in Florida, Washington, and California, she was so happy when one of them could be there and it was a dream come true if they all were there.
Here at Woodland Ridge, Ms. Peggy enjoys the music, pets, games, and parties. She has a smile for everyone. We’re so glad Ms. Peggy decided to call Woodland Ridge her home.
