Five Fun Activities for Seniors with Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia
Many family members that have developed Alzheimer’s Disease have difficulty remembering past events and recalling everyday activities. Yet, quality time with loved ones is important to both parents and children. Here are five interactive activities that are sure to spread smiles while helping your elderly parents living with Alzheimer’s to exercise their five senses:
- Bake cookies: What’s better than fresh-from-the-oven cookies? Baking cookies provides a way for seniors to engage their minds as they work through the steps of a recipe. A hot oven can be dangerous, so always participate fully to ensure safety.
- Garden: Watering plants can help exercise the mind by providing a daily activity with visible results. Caring for plants can keep loved ones engaged in the world around them.
- Sing songs: Singing songs is enjoyable and recent research indicates that music can stir memory and brain activity.
- Reminisce together: Conversation helps stimulate recall. Ask about specific times and engage for details. The more we engage loved ones to remember what they can, the better.
- Toss a ball: Playing catch helps with hand and eye coordination and keeps the mind active on its relationship with the body.
