Anxiety is, unfortunately, common in older adults. According to the Geriatric Mental Health Foundation, the numbers of affected adults can range from 10 to 20 percent of all older Americans. This anxiety is the most common mental health problem among adult women and the second most among adult men.
At Woodland Ridge, we know that when you have a loved one with anxiety, you may need some aid in helping them. It is in the best interest of seniors suffering anxiety to speak to a doctor to diagnose the issue. Many older adults with disorders go undiagnosed as they may not recognize or acknowledge their symptoms. They may believe that such feelings are normal and completely natural. It is not uncommon to miss symptoms of anxiety due to underlying issues. For example, stressful events in a senior’s life may mask a disorder.
Signs of Anxiety
You may need to learn the signs of anxiety and depression as they are closely linked together. Be sure to speak with your primary care physician for any questions or concerns. A few of the signs of an anxiety disorder are:
• Avoiding social situations
• Having excessive concern for safety
• Refusing to do routine activities
• Accelerated heart rate
• Insomnia
• Muscle weakness or tension.
It is always beneficial to consult a physician if these or any other variations occur. Should the physician decide it is necessary, your loved one may need to speak to a mental health expert to diagnose the disorder or, the combination of conditions they are suffering.
Treatment
There are many types of treatments available for anxiety disorders. It is important to note that you may need to work through therapies with your senior. Medication is one of the methods used to treat anxiety disorders. If prescribed, it is crucial that the patient follow the assigned dosage. Any other types of treatment may need your help in reducing the anxious senior’s stress levels and provide them with emotional support. We recommend completing therapy as a means of dealing with these disorders.
Sometimes, you cannot address anxiety by familial support alone, and your loved one may need expert care around the clock. Assisted living is an option that provides respite care to loved ones. Woodland Ridge assisted living offers many programs and therapies to aid in anxiety disorders. Our community also offers senior housing and residents are taken care of by our 24-hour staffing.
